Barry the plush beagle

The story of Barry

Barry was mistakenly admitted to the beagle squad—a customs unit renowned for its dogs' exceptional sense of smell. Beagles are said to have one of the best noses in the canine world. But Barry had none.

While his companions were busy sniffing suitcases and passengers in search of illicit goods, Barry preferred to settle into the softest armchairs or stroll nonchalantly through the pretty shops of the airport.

Faced with his obvious ineffectiveness, the brigade considered handing him over to the University of Cambridge: researchers might perhaps be able to solve the mystery of his total lack of sense of smell.

But one day, fate intervened. A very elegant man—perhaps a duke, judging by his bearing—crossed paths with Barry. Charmed by the dog's distinguished appearance and unusual character, he decided to adopt him on the spot. Since that day, Barry has lived peacefully, without having to lift a finger, in a beautiful home.

He enjoys a lovely garden where he gets some exercise and appreciates the company of his new owner. And when he thinks back on his past, he tells himself that he may not be the best sniffer dog, but here he is the happiest of beagles — and perhaps even the happiest of all dogs.
